Royal
Doulton Hovis Boy
Height approx 5 1/2 inches
Over
the years The Hovis Boy has been one of the most requested figures
by our customers and we are delighted to be able to add it to our
range.
Hovis
Bread was launched in 1886 and is still made today using a patented
wheatgerm flour although it was reformulated in 2005 so as to reduce
the salt content.
It
was developed by flour miller Richard 'Stoney' Smith from Staffordshire
and, after a national competition to find a name for the new bread,
Hovis (from the latin hominis vis or strength of man) was born.
By
1895 Hovis was an established household name selling over one million
loaves of bread a week. The famous 'Don't Say Brown, say Hovis' advertising
slogan began in 1925 but became even more famous when it was used
in 1955 in a TV commercial.
|
The
famous - and fondly remembered - TV advertisement produced by Ridley
Scott and featuring The Hovis Boy struggling up a hill with his bike
was first aired in 1973. The Hovis Boy captured the public's imagination
and has featured in Hovis advertising many times since - most recently
in the TV advert tracking him through the ages and featuring some major
events in the UK of the past 100 years.
