Doulton PG Tips Chimp - Ada
Height - approx 5.75 inches
We
are really pleased to be able to add "Ada" to our range
of advertising icons. Who can forget the long running and delightfully
entertaining series of television advertisements with Ada - and her
friend Dolly - often at the centre of family activities?
PG
Tips Tea dates back to 1930 when it was originally know as Pre-Gest
Tea as it was, at that time, thought that tea aided digestion. It
was soon abbreviated to PG by grocers and van salesmen and the company
adopted it as the official name and added 'tips'.
We
first saw the Chimps in the, now famous, Television advertisements
in 1958 and, such was their popularity, that they continued to promote
PG Tips until they were retired in 2002.
|
| Everyone
had their favourites but perhaps the most famously remembered advertisement
featured Ada with her classic "It's the taste!" catchphrase,
Mr. Shifter with the piano, Cyril the Cyclist arriving in France with
'Avez Vous un Cuppa' and Brooke Bond - the secret agent.
In
fact the Chimp adverts very much tracked social trends and developments
over the years and it was during their watch that, in the 1960s, the
company introduced the Tea Bag.
